The Senior’s Competition Secretary consults the members at least annually before proposing a golfing programme to the Committee for comment at the AGM.

The full competition program for the year is published in advance so that members can plan their golf.   It is currently available on the App “Club V1 Members Hub, the club diary (usually circulated at the start of the season), and on this Website.

The Senior’s Competition Secretary and Committee reserve the right to make necessary changes to the programme details e.g. as a result of weather or missed fixtures and other events beyond local control (Covid 19) but they attempt to keep these to a minimum.

Booking a place in a competition

Competitions usually become available for booking 20 days before play. You may book in on the PSI terminal in the foyer of the Clubhouse or on the Club V1 app (or on HDID).

In most competitions you are free to book in with a chosen playing partner(s), but there are some exceptions to this – most Trophy Competitions are drawn, and in some Pairs Trophy Competitions the pairs will be drawn. (Trophy Competitions are those for which items from the trophy cabinet in the foyer are awarded).

NB You can look elsewhere on this website for current and past Rolls of Honour which list the Trophy winners (Current – “Current Competitions & Updatess” Past – “Archive”).

If the competition is to be drawn (i.e. players allocated a tee time and/or a playing partner) then you will add you name to a competition but will not know your tee time until after the draw (usually a week before play). Players can usually express a preference to be drawn in the earlier (Zone 1) or later (Zone 2) parts of the draw but must recognise there are practical constraints on the allocation of tee times.

Winning the singles competitions for which Trophies are awarded gives the holder access to the Victor Ludorum.

Playing slots during the time allocated for the Seniors Competitions are only available to those playing in the competitions.

We should all welcome new members (of the club or the section) booking into vacant slots to play with us – we want a friendly atmosphere in which to enjoy our golf and a healthy field size benefits us all.

In any case players should be prepared to change their playing arrangements if requested by the Senior’s Competition Secretary (or Starter in large events) in order to make sure the event runs smoothly.

More detailed advice on how to access the computer system is available from the Senior’s Competition Secretary.

Anyone wanting help in selecting a pairs partner should see the Seniors Competition Secretary

Cancellation of a Competition tee booking

In extenuating circumstances a player may have to cancel their booked tee time in a competition. In this case, it is the cancelling player’s responsibility to notify their playing partners of their withdrawal in both non-drawn and drawn competitions.

To contact the affected playing partners the V1 App has a members section which lists all club members along with their consented contact details so the playing partners details may be listed in there.

Depending on the member’s contact details on V1 you can either phone or email them. If no details are available then as soon as possible phone the Office and ask them to let the people know that you have withdrawn.

A back up plan is to contact someone playing around the time you were due to play and ask them to pass on the message.

For Drawn competitions the Competition secretary should also be included in the email communication as the withdrawal may require changes to be made to the draw e.g. 2 balls being converted to 3 balls.

Signing in on the day of competition – usually before 10:30 hrs

You must sign in before playing.   Usually this will only involve entering your intention to play on the computer either by using the terminal in the foyer or using the “How Did I Do App” on your phone or computer.

In the event of a computer failure a paper record will suffice.  You should enter your name on the blank sheet on the Seniors Notice Board kept there for this purpose.

Entry fees for the competition and “extras” such as a Twos sweep are usually taken at “Sign In”. Occasionally the fee is taken at “Booking” but is usually refunded if the entry is withdrawn before the day of play.

Refunds are not normally given if a player withdraws from the competition after signing in.

In Competitions under the WHS (World Handicap System) three things impact on what handicap you should use:-

1/ The WHS recalculates every night and provides you with a Handicap Index – this is calculated (to one decimal point) based on your best eight rounds out of your last twenty – see also “you and your handicap” elsewhere on the website. You will be expected to know your Handicap Index.

2/ Each set of tees on every golf course has been graded and given a Slope Index – these are displayed at every club. The average Slope Index is 113. A calculation using the Handicap Index and the Slope Index produces a Course Handicap. (which you would use if you were playing a casual round of golf at a course other than your own).

3/ There is a Handicap Allowance for the various forms of play. (Most frequently used listed)

Singles Strokeplay (including Stableford and Par/Bogey) – 95%

Fourball (Strokeplay & Stableford) – 85%

Individual Matchplay – 100%

Fourball Matchplay – 90%

Foursomes – 50% of combined Team

Greensomes – 60% of low handicap + 40% of high handicap

Scramble (4 Players) – 25%/20%/15%/10% from lowest to highest handicap

Scramble (3 players) – 30%/20%/10%

Scramble (2 Players) – 25% low/15%

The computer will calculate these items and allocate a Playing Handicap for the Competition being entered (this is shown next to your name on the start sheet) and you will need to note this on your card. Failure to enter your WHS Index, Course Handicap and Playing Handicap on your card will result in disqualification.

The Scorecard

In non Covid restrictions times it is possible to input scores on the terminal in the foyer or to return your scores on line using the “How Did I Do App” on a smart phone or computer and this is perfectly acceptable.

You can only enter your scores via the PSI terminal in the foyer as soon as possible after completing your round. The facility to use HDID app has been suspended so scores cannot be entered after leaving the club.

Score cards are to be exchanged with a playing partner and signed by both player and marker on completion of the round. After entering your score on the PSI the card must be handed in at the bar to a committee member or placed on a table until one is present to take charge of the cards.

For pairs and team competitions you need to make sure you have the members of the teams scores in the same order as they appear on the tee sheet.

The card, before being handed over to your marker, should contain the date, your name and your Handicap Index, your course handicap and your playing handicap and the course (tees) played. There are boxes on the current scorecards for all this information. You should then record the  gross score at each hole for the person whose card you are marking and record your gross score in the Markers column.  It is desirable to complete the name of the competition and calculate your net or stableford score. But the result will be calculated based on the gross score you record.

On completion of the round agree the gross scores with the person marking your card and both player and marker are to sign the card.

You should enter your gross score into the computer system – this should be done as soon as possible after the completion of your round and definitely before the current deadline of 15:00 hrs (and preferably in time to give markers time to check your score when it appears on the leaderboard). Both the player and the marker should consult the leader board to check that an accurate score has been input correctly, any discrepancies to be reported to the Senior’s Competition Secretary as soon as possible.

Incorrectly completed score cards or score cards not handed in will result in disqualification.

The importance of using the computer system is to ensure we meet our obligations in respect of handicap records.

Even if you don’t complete your round, you are required to enter your score for handicap purposes for each hole completed.

Players not recording their scores will be given a “No Return” – repeat offenders will be referred to the Handicap Committee as this practice impacts on everyone’s handicap and undermines the reliability of the individuals handicap.

Results

Once the Competition is closed by the Competition Secretary the results are published on the “How Did I Do App” and the “Club V1 App”.   Even if there is an appeal about some aspect of play to be heard by the Committee the announced result will stand.
