Seniors Invitation Day

Gents,

Our Invitation Day this year is on Wednesday 30th June. It is a 4BBB Stableford competition off the Yellow tees. This is a means of showing off the course to a friend in a “competitive” manner but it is really more of a social event.

There are two criteria for this event. Firstly, to qualify for any prize the guest must have a current WHS Handicap index, so I will need their CDH number to get their handicap index off the system to set up the scoring on the computer. If your guest does not have a current WHS handicap index the team can still play on the day but it will not be in the competition for the prizes.

The second one is there is a playing handicap limit of 28 to be applied.

Booking for this event will open on Monday 26th April at 7.00 a.m. on V1 app/HDID and the terminal in the lobby. Booking closes on 21st June at 15.00hr so that any unused tees can be released back to the club for general booking.

Entry fee for this competition is £10 per team. I will set it up to be taken off your card at sign in on the day. The intention is to have a booking-in person there (me) who will book you in and also sell raffle tickets.

You can book a tee time by adding just your name for now. Then can you please email me, at compsec@burghamparkseniors.co.uk , or let me know in person, your guest’s full name and their home club and, if you have it, their CDH number. I will add in their details to the team on the system. This will then allow score entry on the app/terminal.

Contributions towards raffle prizes will be greatly appreciated and these can be handed to any committee member (Paul Thornton, Doug Lyons, Bill Tarbit, Tony Clarkson, Derek Harrison, Phil Finegold, John Megoran and myself) from now. Your generous contributions are always welcome.

Raffle tickets will be available to purchase on the day.

We wait to see if catering will be available on the day but as this is out of our control we will have to see closer to the time.

Play in bunkers

To clarify the current Covid compliant rules regarding play in bunkers, the ruling is as follows.

A player may move his ball 6 inches in the bunker, no nearer the hole, and cannot smooth the sand to improve the new lie.

So all bunkers are in play, unless marked as GUR, and you may move your ball 6″ no nearer the hole.

Qualifiers starting

As we now move into the handicap qualifying competitions could I make the following requests which should smooth the coming months so that we have only our  own game to moan about ?

1) In order to minimise congestion of groups on holes please only tee off from the first at your allotted tee time not when the group in front are out of range. This will give the necessary 8 minute spacing between groups which should prevent having to wait before playing a shot, which does not help anyone’s game ( well not mine anyway).

Again, if your group lose a hole on the group in front then let the group behind through.

Play a provisional ball if you think a ball might be lost, remember to declare the provisional ball not “I’ll play another” as that is then the ball in play even if you find the first one.

2) Should you be unfortunate to not score on a hole please continue to score the rest of your round and enter your scores at the end.  The system will assign a nett double bogey for handicap purposes for the NR. Your scores, even though a NR, are used as part of the Playing Conditions Calculation for that competition and could influence people’s handicap index. ( it is akin to the old CSS in CONGU).

Not entering a score after signing in to a competition could result in the Handicap committee assigning your worst or best score from your last 20 rounds to the missing score round.

3) Please do check your entered scores in either the PSI terminal or via HowDidIDo app and if the system score differs from that on your card go back and correct the error before accepting/submitting the score.

If you think there is something wrong with the scoring on the system then please contact me as soon as possible, with a photo of your card, either in the clubhouse or via compsec@burghamparkseniors.co.uk  so that it can be looked at before the comp is closed.

Finally if you are feeling positive about your game then just to let you know that the pot for the 2’s sweep is currently sitting at £32. Like all lotteries though you have to be in it to win it!

Good luck ( or skill) over the coming season.

New touch screen in clubhouse lobby

Kevin has asked that we notify the seniors that there is a new touch screen in the lobby. He’s particularly keen for the seniors to be notified that it’ll always be on. It may appear black but that’s only in sleep mode and by touching the screen and waiting the screen will come to life and players can enter their details.

2021 Programme is nearly here

9th April 2021

Dear Colleagues,

I have taken on the daunting challenge of trying to fill David Parkin’s shoes as Competition Secretary for this eclectic mix of senior golfers at Burgham. Many, many thanks are owed to David who has performed miracles in getting us all up to the mark on using apps on computers and phones to book our competition tees, sign in and enter our scores.

As our competition season will start on Monday 12th, 4 club challenge of which one club must be a putter, can I just ask that in these Covid times that whenever possible we use the V1 app to sign in to comps and to enter our scores. This reduces the use of the computer screen in the club house. If you are unable to enter scores on the V1 app then they can be entered on a PC at home up to 4.00 p.m. on the day of the competition. If all the above fail then as a last resort you can send me a photo of your card before 4.00 p.m. to compsec@burghamparkseniors.co.uk . Remember score entry via V1 app on your phone needs a WiFi connection so need to be close to the clubhouse to connect to the club WiFi.

Please ensure that your scores are agreed with your marker before signing your card. Also retain your card for 1 week in case there are any queries.

It has been sometime since we played but a polite reminder on pace of play so that we all enjoy our round, if you lose a hole on the group in front then please let the group behind through. Repair pitch marks on the green and replace divots on the fairways. Play Ready Golf but most of all enjoy, remember we could be at work!

I hope that there will not be any mistakes in the comp set ups on the computer but if there are then it is down to my inexperience, so please bear with me.

We start playing under WHS and the computer will assign your competition playing handicap from your WHS index, the course rating and then the handicap allowance as prescribed by WHS  for the type of competition. This is 95% in singles strokeplay and stableford , 85% for 4BBB. Knock out singles is 100% and for the knockout pairs it is 90%.

For example, my WHS handicap index is 10.6, so off the Yellow tees I have a course handicap of 12. For a singles stroke or stableford comp my playing handicap will be 95 % of 12 = 11.4 so I play off 11 in the competition.

The old CONGU Texas Scramble handicap allowance of 10% is no longer in use under WHS. For 3 man Texas Scramble now team the allowance is the total of 30% of the lowest handicap, 20% for the middle and 10% of the highest handicapped player.

I hope you all have a great summer playing golf and we will be able to socialize at some time soon. I look forward to seeing you all in the carpark and on the course, for the time being.
